My First Year Using Filmhub: A Comprehensive Review
Filmhub: Initial Impressions and Setup
When I first considered using FilmHub, I wanted to ensure they could get my show onto major streaming services like Tubi and Amazon. Before submitting “The Big Laugh,” I had a meeting with FilmHub to discuss technical specs and confirm their ability to deliver. This meeting reassured me that Filmhub was capable of meeting my distribution needs. (Kinda)
The signup process was straightforward. Creating an account and uploading my content was easy. However, the journey was far from over—quality control (QC) turned out to be the most challenging part.
The Quality Control Hurdle
Quality control is critical for any distribution platform, and Filmhub is no exception. Unfortunately, I struggled with QC mainly because of subtitles. I initially tried to create subtitles myself but failed twice. There policy states that failing QC three times means they can’t accept your project, so I opted to use their subtitle service to avoid a third failure. (This was costly, around 300-400 dollars)
The Waiting Game
After months of revisions and waiting, my show The Big Laugh finally made it onto Tubi. However, this victory was bittersweet. Many smaller streaming services picked up my show, but it often didn’t go live within the first year. I spent months waiting for updates, which was frustrating.
Amazon Prime: A Different Approach
My goal was to get “The Big Laugh” on Amazon Prime. As the year dragged on without progress, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I created a Video Direct account and uploaded my show to Amazon myself. This approach gave me more control, but I missed out on the broader distribution FilmHub could have provided. But at least it was on Amazon Prime in America and continues to get views.
Lessons Learned and What I’d Do Differently
Reflecting on my experience, there are a few things I would do differently:
1. Upload in 1080p Instead of 4K: Many streaming services prefer 1080p over 4K. Submitting in 1080p could have expedited the process. (I followed this advice for my second project Zen Comedy and had a much smoother QC)
2. More Graphics: Providing more graphics would have ensured a more cohesive presentation across platforms.
3. Professional Subtitles: Using a service like Rev for subtitles before submission could have saved me time and stress. ( I have used Rev 3 times now, totally worth it)
Would I Use Filmhub Again?
Despite the challenges, I would use Filmhub again. Their new dashboard is more user-friendly, and I believe in their potential to distribute smaller projects effectively. For bigger projects, I might explore other options, but for my current budget and needs, Filmhub is a good fit.
Conclusion
My first year with Filmhub was a learning experience. (expensive learning experience) While there were frustrations and delays, there were also successes and valuable lessons.
